Bioneers By The Bay: Meeting Vandana Shiva

In 2009, I was invited into the wider Bioneers family, a movement of “biological pioneers” who gather each year to share real, practical solutions for healing people and planet. That year’s 20th-anniversary conference brought together thousands of organizers, farmers, Indigenous leaders, artists, scientists, and spiritual activists, all listening for how Earth is asking us to live differently. Somewhere in the swirl of plenaries, workshops, and conversations, I found myself side by side with Dr. Vandana Shiva, the Indian eco-feminist and seed-sovereignty defender whose work I had long admired. This photo of the two of us captures more than a meeting; it holds a moment of kinship between two women trying, in our own ways, to protect the web of life.
